Synvisc, Synvisc One, Hyalgan, Euflexxa, and others are all in the category of Viscosupplements. These injections consist of hyaluronic acid, which is part of your native joint fluid. They are a valuable tool in the treatment of arthritis because they lubricate the affected joint and temper the friction between adjacent tissues within the joint. These injections can provide months to years of relief from arthritis pain.
Stem cell therapy is at the forefront of new technology in the sports medicine world. It can be used in the treatment of arthritis, muscle injuries, and tendon injuries. There are excellent short term outcomes data for stem cell use in musculoskeletal medicine. Stem cells can be combined with platelet-rich plasma injections to maximize therapeutic benefit.
PRP plays a big role in the treatment of arthritis and tendonitis/tendonosis that has not responded to conventional treatment. This is a cutting edge technology which has shown very good results in the treatment of arthritis and tendon injury.
They say that “kids aren’t little adults”, and they’re right. One of the most important differences between young athletes and older athletes is open growth plates. Osgood Schlatter’s disease, little leaguer’s elbow, little leaguer’s shoulder and Sever’s disease (just to name a few) are all caused by injury to an open growth plate. Most of these injuries are due to overuse. At Sports and Family Medicine of Boerne, we are committed to getting the young athlete back on the field, but only when it is safe to do so.
Of course, we also treat fractures, sprains, strains, muscle pulls, concussion and other injuries common to the young athlete.
A broken bone can be both painful and frightening. When you or your child sustains a fractured or broken bone, we will x-ray it in our office, splint or cast it and make a surgical referral when necessary. Often times, however, the management of a fracture does not need a surgical referral- we will guide you through this process.
We do sports physicals for every sport, from little league to professional sports.
Arthritis (osteoarthritis) is the most common cause of joint pain and stiffness in the active population and is caused by a general “wearing out” process of the joints. More specifically, the joint surfaces are covered in a type of cartilage called articular cartilage. Over time, this cartilage thins. Eventually, this leads to pain in the involved joint. Arthritis a condition for which there is no cure, BUT we do have a few great strategies and treatments to slow the progression of arthritis and vastly improve symptoms. Many times we are able to reduce or eliminate use of pills, while improving function and reducing pain and stiffness.
Whether it’s a case of tennis elbow, jumper’s knee, or Achilles tendonitis, an inflamed tendon is PAINFUL. In the vast majority of cases, we can treat the symptoms of tendonitis and identify its cause and make the necessary modifications to prevent its return.
A bursa is a fluid sack that serves to reduce friction between a bone and soft tissue. Bursitis is an inflammation in the bursa, which is PAINFUL. Treatment for bursitis consists of cooling down the inflammation, correcting the cause of the inflammation and building protective strength in the surrounding muscles.
